Managing your voter database

How do I import voters into my database?

You can import data from any comma-separated value (CSV) file, with one row representing each voter record. You can find more information here about how to format your import file and what data types we can import.

You can do as many data imports as you want, and Camelot will automatically merge duplicate records by voter ID or various other criteria, including contact information, name, and date of birth.

How do I create custom lists?

Custom lists are essentially saved searches, based on any criteria you select. They are updated in real time, so a list will always include all of the people who match its criteria. That means, for example, a list of people who have been contacted in your Q4 Donations phone bank will grow as more people are contacted.

To create a custom list, first run the search query associated with the list (under the People tab, then the Search button). While viewing the query results, you’ll see a button at right that says Save as Custom List; clicking that button will allow you to name your list and make it public, if you choose to do so and have sufficient permissions. Public lists are visible to everyone with an account and can be used for outreach.

How are voting likelihood scores calculated?

Voting likelihood scores are calculated automatically after you create elections (under your Configuration tab). Scores are determined based on the proportion of eligible elections in which an individual has voted, with greater weight given toward more recent elections.

What types of outreach can I conduct through Camelot?

Camelot includes four types of outreach: phone banks, door-to-door canvasses, blast emails, and direct (paper) mailings.

How do I target specific voters with my outreach?

All of our outreach—phone banks, door-to-door canvasses, blast emails, and direct mailings—are tied to specific voter lists. Whenever you’re viewing a list you’ll see options to start outreach targeted to that list; if you choose to start an outreach campaign first, you’ll be asked which list to target.

To target all of your voters, just choose the All People list included in your account by default.

Online fundraising & analytics

What type of merchant account do I need to use Camelot fundraising?

We partner with Stripe to allow our clients to begin accepting payments immediately, with no need for a separate merchant account and no delay before processing your first payments.

If you have an existing Stripe account, you’ll just have to connect it to Camelot. If you don’t, Stripe will just need some basic information, including your bank account information for deposits. In either case, from the Fundraising section under the Configuration tab, just click the “Connect to Stripe” button. We’ll briefly send you to their site to create a Stripe account or connect an existing account, and then you’ll come right back to your account, ready to accept payments.

What is the minimum contribution I can accept?

The minimum contribution we allow is $5. Because of various credit card processing fees, it’s not economical—for us or for you—to accept payments below that amount.

If you’d prefer to use a higher minimum, you can: just update the minimum contribution setting in your Fundraising settings, under the Configuration tab.

Website publishing

How much technical knowledge do I need to manage my website through Camelot?

To manage your content? None.

Camelot separates your websites design and code from the content you write. That means that your campaign manager, your volunteers, or anybody else you provide access can create new pages or update existing content without any technical knowledge.

Making significant changes to your layout or design requires knowledge of HTML and CSS, along with a basic knowledge of our simple template logic.

What are website themes?

Website themes allow you to separate the layout and design of your site from its content. Themes include wrappers, templates, partials, and assets (images, CSS files, etc.), but your pages exist outside any single theme. Themes also allow you to edit it your website’s design in a second theme before making those changes live.

When you change your live theme, Camelot will automatically insert your content into the new theme’s layouts and will load the new theme’s images and other assets. Note that if there are assets that you want to use with multiple themes (for instances, images in your blog posts), you should save them in the shared assets folder.

A single theme can include different varieties. Varieties are an easy way to implement simple changes, such as different color schemes. With varieties, we’ll use the same wrappers, templates, and partials, but Camelot will attempt to load files named file._variety_.extension. For example, we’ll load while you’re using your blue theme, but when your red variety is live.

How do I change my website theme?

Under the Website tab, you’ll see an option for Themes, which shows your current theme and other themes you have created or installed. To change from one theme to another, click “Update live theme” and choose the theme you’d like to use.

You can add a new theme at any time as well, starting with a blank template or by cloning an existing theme and then editing it.

Billing and account management

How can I change my billing options or cancel my account?

If you are an account administrator, you can see your current plan, past invoices, and billing information under the Account tab at the top right of any Camelot page. From there, you can upgrade or downgrade your plan, change your credit card information, or cancel your account. You can cancel your amount at any time.

How do I upgrade or downgrade my account?

You can easily upgrade or downgrade your account to change the products you’re using (HQ or Camelot) and the number of voters or supporters included. Click the Account tab on any Camelot page, and you’ll be shown your current plan and a list of other options. Just choose the one you want.

For upgrades, we’ll bill the difference in price for the rest of the month; for downgrades, we’ll provide a credit off your next month’s payment.

Do you offer discounts for long-term arrangements?

We do! If you choose to prepay for six months, we offer a discount of 10%; for a 12 month commitment, we offer a 15% discount. Discounts are also available to consultants who are running a number of concurrent campaigns with Camelot.
